The neighbourhood has been the centre of Singapore's ethnic Malay community since Malays settled there in mid-19th century, following the dispersement of their floating village at the mouth of the Singapore river. | |
Geylang has avoided the rapid development that has engulfed much of Singapore since the 1970's, and it is still old traditional shop houses that dominate the landscape. These house several famous eateries and there is plenty of good local food around too. In addition to its traditional setting, Geylang also houses a Singaporean red light district, where women of the night legally sell their services. The services generally are offered at houses with bright red house numbers. Geylang hosts hundreds of these brothels. Geylang also offers some of the more affordable accommodation in Singapore, making it a common haunt for backpackers. |
